Sigma Phi Epsilon’s Queen of Hearts is an annual philanthropy event to raise money and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Iowa. Starting in 2001 when a brother in the Fraternity was diagnosed with Leukemia and passed away, Queen of Hearts honors him along with the thousands of others who battle blood diseases and cancers.
The fraternity was challenged again in 2011 when one a brothers was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Originally from Africa, his parents couldn’t be close by, so members of SigEp rallied behind our brother, raising money for his hospital visits and treatments, raising awareness to support the cause, and fulfilling other needs like providing transportation to and from the hospital and visiting him in the hospital. The chapter raised money to fly his parents from Africa to Drake to see him.
In the fall of 2013, over $17,000 was raised. In 2014, over $24,000 was raised. In the fall of 2016, we raised just under $23,000, making Sigma Phi Epsilon the largest 3rd-party donor to LLS in all of Iowa.
